Do Hair Implants Work Hair implant is an aesthetic procedure to restore hair to thinned or bald areas of the scalp – and, if desired, to the beard, eyebrows, and even the chest – using the patient’s hair. The hair is taken from the back and/or sides of the scalp to serve as donor’s hairs and to the occasional patient, the donor’s hairs come from the beard in a technique called BHT or body hair implant. These hairs are not genetically sensitive to the hair loss process, so when the transplant will continue to grow for a lifetime.
Do Hair Implants Work
Hair implant surgery is the only way to restore permanent hair in bald or thinned areas. The hope is that the research we do and some of our colleagues with stem cells and other innovative therapies will provide a more permanent solution, but until then – transplants are the gold standard – proven to provide long-term results.
Two hair transplant techniques can be used: follicular unit extraction or FUE, and follicular unit transplantation or FUT. FUE is almost universally the technique of choice for men, explaining why over 95% of the procedures performed at the Foundation are FUE. Our clinic’s doctors are considered one of the world’s experts in FUE, not only for technique but especially for aesthetics, able to create natural lines for hair with the highest rates of hair regeneration, while minimizing scarring on the donor site. With the right results, regeneration rates with FUE are as high as not higher than with FUT and FUE leaves no linear scar in the donor area.
Finally, hair implants for men are approached by our clinicians as real cosmetic surgery, without passing the procedure on to others where the surgeon’s cosmetic eye is really valuable.
How Hair Implants Work
Every hair on your body has and knows its own identity – whether it is the scalp, eyebrow hair, leg hair or arm hair, and so on. Implanted hairs will continue to grow the way they grow, wherever you put it. For example, eyebrow hair will grow like eyebrow hair even if it is transplanted to your head. This is the theory behind hair implants.
When you implant a scalp and hair, it will retain the characteristics of the scalp area from which it was taken. The sides and bottom of the head do not usually look bald, even in the more advanced male and female baldness. This is because the follicles in these areas are not affected by male hormones. So when you remove the follicles from here and place them elsewhere, they will continue to grow as before.
What Conditions Are Suitable For Hair Implants?
Implants are suitable for certain types of hair loss, but not for everyone. Your hairdresser or implant surgeon will be able to advise you on your eligibility for treatment.
Hair implants are commonly used to treat hair loss in both men and women. In these cases, the hairs are transplanted from the back and sides of the scalp (sometimes referred to as the “permanent” area, as these hairs grow indefinitely throughout a person’s lifetime) to the upper/frontal/coronary areas of the scalp (sometimes referred to as the “non-permanent” area, as it can be affected by hair loss in men/women.
In addition to hair loss for men and women, hair implants can also be used for:
- Retention / mechanical hair loss
- Hair loss due to burns
- Hair loss after plastic surgery, such as facelifts
- Permanent hair loss after radiotherapy
- Hair transplantation can also be used to create or thicken eyebrows where they have been lost, depending on the cause.
Hair implants are not suitable for hair loss due to the following conditions:
- Primary scarring alopecia (resulting from an autoimmune condition), such as frontal fibrotic alopecia
- Alopecia Areata
Candidates For Hair Implant
Hair implants are usually performed on people with baldness in men and are in fact the most common plastic surgery procedure performed on men. It can restore the density or reduce the thinning of the hairline, create time points, and fill in areas of diffuse thinning and repair the less aesthetic results of previous hair transplant procedures. People with thin or missing eyebrows, mustaches, or beards, as well as people with hair loss due to injuries or previous FUT hair implants are also suitable candidates.
Reasonable good health and realistic expectations are important, which will be provided by our doctors so that you understand what to expect. The procedure can be safely performed on people from the mid to early 20s to the late 70s and beyond. Of course, each case is evaluated by the physician for the suitability, along with the provision of alternative or combination therapies. In an occasional case, your doctor will advise the patient to have dialysis by their doctor or cardiologist and, if necessary, the procedure can be performed under the supervision of an anesthesiologist who can monitor the patient and administer sedation to the patient twilight if you will.
